‘The Peace of Wild Things’

A Celebration of the Woodland

Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July 2025

Hector's House, The Woodland Discovery Centre, Ecclesall Woods, Abbey Lane, Sheffield S7 2QZ

An exhibition of work by local artists Anne Atkinson and Kath Williamson.

Inspired by Ecclesall Woods and a poem by Wendell Berry:

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Anne Atkinson

Anne has lived in Millhouses for many years and Ecclesall Woods has been a constant   inspiration and restorative presence for her. She paints a variety of subjects including landscapes inspired by Scotland, Cornwall and the Peak District, still life and sometimes abstracts. For this exhibition she has explored a variety of ways to express her love of the woodland and nature and hopes that her work evokes similar feelings of calm and contemplation.

Kath Williamson

My work is informed by:

Things I notice and things I remember.

The forms and rhythms of nature.

Energy, mutability and flux.

Process:

Building on digital photographic layering through a range of materials and techniques.

Furthering my knowledge through reading, experimentation and reflection on these intuitively-led images.
