We four are taking part in Open Up Studios this year and will be sharing our finished work as well as work in progress.

Everyone is welcome (including dogs!). Just come and take a look round and see what catches your eye. Most finished work will be for sale, but there’s no pressure to buy.

The Open Up event gives you the chance to find out what inspires us and how we do what we do…….

Hope to see you there!

Anne Atkinson

I love to paint things that bring me joy – sometimes a still life, sometimes a landscape inspired by Scotland, Cornwall or the Peak District. At other times I paint purely abstractly, inspired by my love of colour and texture. In my landscapes I try to create paintings that describe a sense of place and the feelings that the places evoke in me. I work from both observation and memory.  I work mainly in acrylic, but I also use charcoal, pencil, collage, ink and pastel. I work on several pieces at a time, moving from one to the other. I start with intuitive mark making and build up many layers of paint and scrape through, sand back and rework to reveal the history of the painting.

In contrast to my landscapes, I take inspiration for my still life paintings from the colour and shape of various vessels that I collect and the stories that they might evoke, as well as flowers and plants and domestic scenes.

I moved into my studio at the Chapel Gallery in September 2023. I have taken part in exhibitions in Sheffield, Buxton and Bamford and at the Mall Galleries in London.

Pauline Calvert

The nature that is around us provides me with inspiration.

I try to put the feeling I have for a place into my semi abstract work.

I work intuitively letting the paint guide me, layering in paint and mixed media.

Clare Hill

Having had a working life as a structural engineering technician I escaped the constraints of technical drawing and in later life became a semi abstract landscape painter working in mixed media. I create colourful , joyous personal artwork. I am inspired by nature and its raw beauty . I love experiencing the feeling of simply being alive in all elements whether sunny or stormy.

I believe art can recreate these experiences and can remind us of exactly how we felt at the time. It should stir our soul.

I work both intuitively, i.e with little or no plan, from my own reference photos. I use the photos to jolt my memory into recalling how I felt when I was actually there and that is what I want to impart to the viewer.

I use many layers of mixed media - I love using acrylic paint, oil pastels, crayons, pencils all on one surface. I use collage that is hand made by me or that I have collected that is pertinent to my subject and personal to me. Using this method means that my paintings 'talk' to me and lead me down unexpected paths.

Only when I love each part of the painting do I know it's finished. I live in Sheffield very close to the Peak District but also close enough to North Yorkshire to visit frequently. Both places are a wonderful source of inspiration . Cornwall too is a favourite haunt and provides a rather different aspect to my art .

Over the last few years I have focussed on process rather than on creating finished pieces. Guiding themes are mutability, flux and the urban wild.

I continue to build on my photographic skills by exploring digital editing, mark making, printmaking, painting and collage ; all within the context of layering different elements. This is taking me away from realism and towards abstraction.
